The Field Director is responsible for leading a Gastroenterology Medical Science Liaison (MSL) team in providing scientific, research, and educational support to health care professionals and internal partners related to the current and future Janssen Immunology products.

Responsible for the development of all employees within the department by supporting the development of Human Resources Planning (HRP) programs including management development and training to meet current and future business needs. The Field Director will partner with the MSL Head to set and drive strategy for the MSL team. The Field Director is responsible for insuring strong clinical engagement strategy for each territory within their responsibility and will conduct routine strategy reviews with each MSL direct report.

The primary role of the Field Director is to provide support, coaching and development to each of their direct reports, utilizing the competency model, routine feedback, and periodic field observation.

The Field Director will be responsible for the execution of field Medical Affairs programs, including product launches, proactive initiatives, and HCP engagement. The Field Director is responsible for ensuring that each direct report is functioning at the expected level of scientific acumen/expertise, presentation skills, and soft skill abilities.

The Field Director is responsible to stay abreast of the scientific information and disease states to ensure the ability for proficient interaction on the topic and to support modeling and coaching with their team. They will also insure the MSL execution of listening priorities and the collection and analysis of Medical Insights.

The Field Director will embody positive change leadership, including maintaining performance, professionalism, and integrity in stressful situations and multiple task setting, coordinating with other Medical Affairs personnel.

Planning coordination will be required to optimally manage priorities. The Field Director is expected to identify possible solution(s) and make a recommendation to the supervisor for action in alignment with the company’s scientific objectives. In addition, the Field Director will work collaboratively with internal business partners to meet scientific needs of customers.

The Field Director is responsible for providing oversight of all activities in accordance with current regulatory and health care compliance guidelines.

Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for the management of a Gastroenterology MSL team (5-8 direct reports) including:
    • Ensure that team functions according to the business plan and company directives
    • Conducts routine team field visits and 1:1 meetings, providing observation and coaching
    • Conduct performance coaching and feedback discussions
    • Provide oversight responsibility for team’s training and development
    • Ensure team optimal capacity, field activity level, and field metrics
    • Ensures each MSL territory plan is strategic, up to date and actionable
    • Manages the team through special projects and cross functional support activities

The Field Director is responsible for the recruiting and retention of a diverse team of top talent and will actively implement leadership strategies to inspire and motivate their team members

  • Provide career and succession planning in support of staff reaching their highest potential

  • Responsible for timely completion of administrative duties. Examples include assessment and approval of expense reports, preparation, and communication of team metric reports, among others.
  • Co-lead the communication of MSL team achievement updates to appropriate internal partners and levels of management
  • The Field Director will be responsible for field partner communication and collaboration across their respective regions. They will insure their team’s compliant, routine communication with all partners, such as Gastroenterology Sales Reps, District Managers, KAMs, PEMs and other Gastroenterology/Immunology MSLs.
  • Participate in business planning activities as necessary across the various brands and within Medical Affairs. Ensure appropriate training on and execution of proactive initiatives and other permissible field activities.

The Field Director will partner with the MSL Head to develop and execute the strategy for their region/organized providers. Provide insights and perspective from their KOLs and other specialists that will help refine the development of the overall TA strategy

The Field Director will be responsible for leading scientific projects and programs as assigned by the Scientific Director. This will include joint strategic design with the Scientific Director and independent tactical execution.

  • Ensures effective and efficient collection and distribution of medical insights to appropriate internal stakeholders.
  • May be responsible for identifying and developing field scientific strategies
  • Participates and/or leads cross functional/company initiatives

Qualifications

  • A minimum degree of PharmD, MD/DO, PhD, Physician Assistant (PA) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) is required
  • Minimum of 8 years required; 4-5 years of pharmaceutical industry,
  • Clinical/research experience is required
  • 2-3 years of MSL experience is required.
  • Therapeutic area-related experience is required.
  • Previous people management responsibility is preferred.
  • Requires regional travel of approx. 60% depending on geography (includes overnight travel);
  • Ability to maintain an office in the home required.
  • Must live in their assigned region and in close proximity to an airport.
  • Must be available to attend periodic national scientific congresses and key strategic/scientific meetings at the corporate office in Horsham, PA.
  • Must be fluent in the English language and have excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Expected to work 40-hour work week, with flexibility on occasion to work additional hours when needed.
  • Requires travel of approximately 60% depending on geography (includes overnight travel); Other travel for business meetings as required; Travel by air, including overnight and weekends as needed.
  • Must be able to lift and transport work materials
  • A valid driver’s license is required

The anticipated base pay range for this position is $152K to midpoint $229K. The Company maintains highly competitive, performance-based compensation programs. Under current guidelines, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus. The annual performance bonus is a cash bonus intended to provide an incentive to achieve annual targeted results by rewarding for individual and the corporation’s performance over a calendar/performance year. Bonuses are awarded at the Company’s discretion on an individual basis.
