BioAge Labs (BIOA) is a publicly held biopharmaceutical company that is harnessing the biology of human aging to develop new therapies for metabolic diseases.
We are seeking to hire a Research Associate I into our in vivo biology team and work in our state-of-the-art vivarium. Initially this will be hired as a temporary employee, however there is a reasonable likelihood that we will have a full time employee need within 3-6 months, and at that time would transition the successful individual to employee status. This onsite position will report to our Emeryville office and may require to be scheduled to work on some weekends and holidays due to the 24/7/365 needs of animal care.
Position Summary:
The Research Associate I, In Vivo will conduct preclinical research for drug discovery, primarily using rodent models. This entry-level role is suited for a highly motivated and interactive individual who can work effectively in a team-oriented and highly matrixed environment. The Research Associate I will assist in providing technical and scientific in vivo support and animal care, contributing to the advancement of drug discovery programs targeting aging-related diseases with high unmet medical needs.
Essential Job Duties:
- Assist in dosing, blood collection, measurement, and clinical observation of laboratory mice to support in vivo studies.
- Gain proficiency in in-vivo technical skills, including dosing (IP/IV/PO/SC/IM/IT/IN), bleeding (submandibular/ submental/retro-orbital/tail vein/cardiac), euthanasia, and necropsy of laboratory mice.
- Prepare mice for studies, including shaving and animal identification (e.g., ear tag, ear notching, tail mark).
- Collect and record relevant data, providing feedback to team members on the progress of assigned projects.
- Maintain detailed records of measurements, observations, and other required data.
- Adhere to animal welfare rules and regulations under supervision.
- Monitor the health of laboratory mice, recognizing signs of disease and adhering to humane endpoints.
- Participate in weekend and holiday rotations with peers.
- Assist in vivarium maintenance, including restocking supplies, cleaning, and sharing husbandry duties.
- Help prepare and maintain laboratory equipment and supplies, ensuring inventory management.
- Collaborate with the team towards the goals of our therapeutics programs.
- Receive training in more complex procedures as needed.
Required Skills and Abilities:
- Developing hands-on in-vivo technical skills.
- Strong motivation and the ability to multitask and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment.
- Organized and disciplined in record-keeping.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Some understanding of aging and/or age-related diseases in animal models is beneficial.
Education and Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Biology or a related discipline, or two years of hands-on experience with laboratory rodents.
- Pursuit or possession of AALAS certification (ALAT, LAT, LATG) is desirable.

The salary for this role is expected to be approximately $35/hour while a temporary employee, and up to $80,000 annually as a full time employee. This pay structure may be adjusted accordingly for someone with more or less experience. Safety: Ability to adhere to safety protocols and guidelines when working with laboratory equipment, chemicals, and animals, including the ability to respond to emergency situations.
Manual Dexterity: Proficient manual dexterity to perform precise and intricate tasks, such as animal handling, dosing, surgical procedures, and continuous use of the computer keyboard and/or repetitive hand motion.
Aseptic Techniques: Ability to maintain a sterile and aseptic environment during surgical procedures and animal handling.
Animal Care: Ability to provide proper care and attention to laboratory animals, including monitoring their health and wellbeing, as well as performing necessary procedures, such as euthanasia and necropsy, following ethical and regulatory standards.
