The Elevator Pitch

Do you enjoy leading a team of people on an ongoing journey? Do you want to help Evolv Cloud move into its next phase of growth?

As a Software Engineering Manager (Cloud/AWS), you will be the dedicated engineering lead charting the course to and collaborating with the team to deliver the needed features and improvements to achieve four 9s reliability for cloud services within the next couple of years. You will be a leading part in helping Evolv move our customer and install support infrastructure to the cloud to help scale the organization. In parallel, you will lead the charge to improve the software engineering practices used by the cloud teams.


Success in the Role: What are performance outcomes over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?

In the first 30 days, you will:

  • Meet with the cloud team, sit in on meetings, and understand the software development process in use
  • Attend internal system training to understand the Express scanner operation
  • Understand the current software practices, cadence, and ceremonies
  • Map out the current architecture and identify pitfalls in the design
  • Start to answer questions related to the Cloud Infrastructure and Portal operations from the customer support team
  • Within 3 months, you will:

  • Be recognized within Engineering as the go to person for the Cloud infrastructure and Portal
  • Take the lead in triaging all questions related to the Cloud Infrastructure and Portal operations from the customer support team before distributing to the engineering team
  • Have created a detailed resiliency and scale plan that has been approved by the cloud and product teams with the product roadmap updated to reflect key milestones
  • Identify areas for improvement in the practice of software engineering within the cloud team
  • Outline areas for improvement to remove bottlenecks and reduce friction during the development and QA cycles
  • By the end of the first year, you will:

  • Be recognized by teams outside of Engineering (including Customer Success and Technical Sales & Solutions) as the go to person for the Cloud infrastructure and Portal
  • Be able to demonstrate significant improvement in resiliency while holding costs flat
  • Clearly articulate the on-going roadmap while balancing tech debt and new features
  • Demonstrate several areas that were improved in the practice of software engineering within the cloud team
  • Demonstrate several software development changes that improved engineering practice health and developer satisfaction

  • The Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

    • Leadership
      • Demonstrate technical depth and earn the respect of senior developers ·
      • Mentor junior developers ·
      • Pair with junior developers on a regular basis
      • Review code and architecture
      • Submit PRs for small changes
      • Lead the system integration testing effort of advanced development projects
      • Chart improvements in junior developers' output (quality or quantity) every 30 days
      • Create the resiliency proposal by day 30
      • In collaboration with engineering and product, align on and merge resiliency efforts into the roadmap
      • Execute on the roadmap through the remainder of the year, demonstrating increased resiliency by end of year
      • Team Engagement
      • Imbue the team with a sense of purpose
      • Understand individual team members and how they want to develop and grow
      • Review PRs Engage the team through non-work related in-office activities e.g., Ice Cream Social, Craft Hall dinners, Haiku writing, baking contests and more
      • Focus on applying Radical Candor
      • Understand the process by Day 30
      • Receive feedback from peers/boss by Day 60
      • Give feedback to select colleagues by Day 90
      • Develop a plan for broader adoption by Day 120
      • Encourage usage within team by Day 180

    What is the leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team?

    • You will be joining the 15+ Cloud/ AWS team and report to the VP of Software Engineering.
    • You will work with an established team of on-shore and off-shore resources who are experts in python-based Lambdas, infrastructure as code through Terraform, scalable Aurora PostgreSQL db instances, rich UIs built in React, and well-defined product requirements

    • The location of this role is based at our HQ in Waltham, MA with opportunity to be remote some days.
