Company Overview:

At Relativity Space, we have two audacious goals: to build the next great commercial launch company with Terran R and to become the leading force in additive manufacturing innovation. Both contribute to our long-term vision of creating humanity’s industrial base on Mars, paving the way for interplanetary life to expand the possibilities of the human experience. This journey begins right hereon Earth – where we design, build, and fly rockets to deliver customer payloads to orbit, while our groundbreaking research and development in 3D printing pushes the boundaries of large-scale additive manufacturing and will unlock critical infrastructure and technological advancements required for both Earth-bound and Mars-bound missions.

Your journey with us is more than just a job – it’s an opportunity to shape the future of aerospace technology, additive manufacturing, and the human experience alongside a community of passionate, creative individuals. Join us on this extraordinary journey, as we work together to transform our vision into reality

About the Team:

This multidisciplinary R&D team in Relativity's Innovation & Development organization is responsible for the exploration, research and development of our robotics-based additive manufacturing technology. The team has built and continues to upgrade Stargate, the world’s largest large-format metal 3D printer that is used to produce aerospace vehicles and specialized mechatronic systems.

As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will:

  • Work closely with our Robotics, Software, Weld, Simulation and NDE Teams to generate requirements for our novel process and turn them into functional detailed designs.
  • Be responsible for conceptualizing and translating engineering requirements into detailed designs for various application in our printers. You support efforts to enable and automate every aspect of the process including additive, subtractive, inspection, and maintenance.
  • In order to be successful in this role, you should be someone who is self-motivated, thrives in ambiguity, and is able to lead their own projects to completion. Ideally, you are someone who has come from a fast-paced environment, having completed difficult projects with extreme ownership while collaborating effectively with other key groups

About You:

  • BS or MS in Mechanical engineering or a related field (Engineering, Physics)
  • 5+ years of experience designing industrial automation equipment, mechanical structures, ground support equipment or flight/automotive/consumer hardware
  • Experience with CAD and CAM software, with emphasis on NX, for modeling or drafting, including GD&T
  • Experience designing industrial automation systems; capable of deriving requirements for and specifying mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic components

Nice to haves but not required:

  • Master’s or Ph.D. degree in mechanical engineering
  • Extensive experience rapidly prototyping in a R&D environment, fully realizing ideas from concept to production
  • Demonstrated experience in creative technical problem-solving and hands-on hardware assembly
  • Experience interfacing with R&D engineers and managing relationships with external vendors
  • Experience incorporating human factors and safety into design solutions
  • Proficiency in mechatronics and mechanical design principles, manufacturing processes, materials knowledge and ability to design for sensor and electronics integration
  • Mechanical design experience with automated systems and integration with industrial automation robots
  • Experience in performing structural FEA analysis using ANSYS, ABAQUS, or equivalent
  • Self-starter that has demonstrated the ability to define and own a product from minimum requirements and concepts
