Histologist (Organ Perfusion)
Until
San Francisco, CA, USA

Until is a moonshot company building a “pause button” for biology. Our near-term focus is organ-scale reversible cryopreservation: preserving donated organs at subzero temperatures without ice formation, then rewarming them uniformly for transplant. By solving this grand challenge, we’re laying the foundation for whole-body reversible cryopreservation, giving patients a bridge to future cures.
To achieve our goal, we are assembling an interdisciplinary team to develop perfusion systems, cryoprotectant formulations, and vitrification and rewarming hardware.
We envision a future where no transplantable organ is lost to logistics, and no terminal diagnosis is final because patients can safely wait for future medicine to arrive.
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced, highly skilled Histologist—at the level of a senior research associate, scientist, or PhD-trained researcher—to lead histology assay development for evaluating mechanical and toxic damage in tissues following cryopreservation.
In this role, you will (1) design and implement histology assays from the ground up, selecting appropriate methodologies based on scientific needs, (2) collaborate with pathologists to generate high-quality, interpretable tissue health reports. (3) integrate additional molecular biology techniques such as western blotting and qPCR into the tissue processing pipeline, and (4) oversee tissue tracking, management, and processing, ensuring rigorous experimental data integrity from sample intake through imaging and quantification.
You will have the freedom to innovate, propose new approaches, and work across disciplines to improve our understanding of tissue health in the context of cryopreservation.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the development and optimization of histology-based assays for tissue damage assessment.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with pathologists, molecular biologists, and engineers to design experiments that answer critical scientific questions.
- Manage end-to-end tissue sample workflows: labeling, tracking, processing, imaging, and archiving.
- Incorporate additional analytical methods (western blot, qPCR, immunohistochemistry) into the histology workflow.
- Ensure data quality and coordinate with the data science team for analysis and reporting.
- Survey literature and apply first-principles reasoning to identify and adopt novel histological and molecular techniques.
Qualifications
- PhD in a relevant life sciences discipline OR ≥3 years of hands-on histology experience with a proven record of independently selecting and implementing assays.
- Demonstrated expertise in histological techniques, tissue processing, staining, and imaging.
- Strong track record of method development and optimization based on research needs.
- Experience integrating histological data with molecular assays (e.g., western blot, qPCR).
- Excellent organizational skills and meticulous attention to sample tracking and data integrity.
- Preferred:
- Background in pathology or experience collaborating closely with pathologists.
- Familiarity with evaluating mechanical or toxic tissue damage.
Benefits
- Opportunity for outsized impact creating the future as an early team member
- Generous medical, dental and vision insurance coverage
- Flexible time off and paid holidays
- Competitive compensation package, including salary and equity
- 401(k) retirement savings plan
- FSA and commuter benefits
- Subsidized lunch daily
