About the Role

Whisper Aero is a next-generation, air propulsion company that delivers thrust more cleanly, efficiently, and quietly than ever before.
This role will be focused on structural design, analysis and optimization of components and systems. They will drive key structural design decisions and work closely with our Structures Lead, Chief Engineer, and hardware team regularly. In this role you will work with the team to identify high level needs for future propulsors and test equipment and then develop designs to address these needs.
Individually, you will be responsible for performing first principles analysis, finite element analysis, and structural sizing. As part of a team, you will participate in and present during reviews, provide feedback to the design and flight sciences teams, and other related tasks as needed.
The successful candidate will be someone who has a solid track record of designing, analyzing, and producing flight weight hardware and will bring a can-do attitude to the most challenging problems.

What You’ll Do

Construct rotor analytical models and conduct analyses in technical areas including rotor modal tuning, rotor loads, aeroelastic stability and ground resonance using multi-body dynamics and modal analysis tools
Construct finite element models of turbomachinery-like components and complete assemblies using best modeling practices.
Support modal and dynamic testing for flight projects, study tasks & proposals.
Provide structural engineering knowledge to project personnel and contractors through all phases of the project from early system level configuration studies through critical design review (CDR), manufacturing, assembly, and finally verification and validation through static, dynamic, and modal testing.
Perform structural configuration layouts and sizing of future propulsor and platform concepts employing metallic, composite, and thermoplastic materials to minimize flight weight while maintaining structural integrity.
Coordinate with other disciplines in support of design configuration trades, constraints, and decisions.
Automation and integration of structural analyses into computational design framework
Provide support to customers for issues that arise in application
Write technical reports that are accurate and comprehensive to be peer-reviewed by other team members.

Basic Qualifications

U.S. Person status is required, as this position may access export controlled data
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Civil Engineering or related technical discipline with typically a minimum of 7 years of related experience; Masters degree in similar disciplines with a minimum of 5 years of related experience; or PhD in similar disciplines with a minimum of 3 years related experience.
Strong understanding of rotational dynamics theory is required.
Experience with aeroelastics, structural dynamics, vibration and rotordynamics
Full understanding of statics, fatigue, dynamics, solid mechanics, and free-body diagrams to perform classical hand-calculation methods
Experience with finite element modeling with NX/Nastran, ANSYS, Abaqus, or others
Experience with a 3D CAD package such as Solidworks, NX, CATIA V5, or Fusion 360
Basic understanding of metallic and composite materials manufacturing (e.g. machining, injection molding, lamination theory, fabrication and assembly processes, etc.)
Familiarity with Python
Strong technical, written, and verbal communication skills
Experience in a fast-paced design environment

Bonus Qualifications

Experience with rotor blade structural analysis and optimization
Experience with multi-body simulation codes, such as RCAS or Dymore
Experience with and understanding of high fidelity CFD/CSD methods
Experience with dynamic test and data analysis (FFT, analog and digital filters, etc.)
Proficient in Python; Experience in Julia, VBA, or Matlab
Experience with electric machines and motors
Experience analyzing bearings and their influence on the system behaviors
Experienced with design for manufacturing, in regards to CNC, injection molding, additive manufacturing
Demonstrated hands on experience with at least one of the following: CNC machining, composites, 3D printing, prototyping, mechanical assembly
Familiarity with data management, revision and version control: Git
Cross-disciplinary interests are strongly encouraged
