Whisper Aero is seeking a Senior System Engineer in Nashville, TN. The Senior Systems Engineer will lead aircraft, subsystem, and engine level system design, architecture development, and system integration. This role will be responsible for the design, integration, and validation of hybrid-electric and fully electric aircraft and propulsion systems. This role will also cover the full life cycle including requirements development, architecture definition, component verification, and system validation. The successful candidate will be someone who is comfortable working both independently and within a team in a fast-paced start-up environment.
What You’ll Do
  • Lead system design and system integration for aircraft, subsystems, and engines
  • Define system architectures, interfaces, and requirements for integrated aircraft systems
  • Perform system trade studies, safety analyses, and failure mode assessments
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure a consistent and optimal system design
  • Develop and maintain system level design data such as requirements, ICDs, and verification plans
  • Generate requirements from customer feedback and business needs
  • Decompose requirements and functions from system level down to the component level
  • Evaluate the system impacts of requirements changes
  • Define verification and validation strategies and plans
  • Support testing and validation activities
  • Ensure compliance with aerospace standards and regulatory requirements
Basic Qualifications
  • U.S. Person status is required, as this position may access export-controlled data.
  • Requires a bachelor’s degree in aerospace, mechanical, electrical, or systems engineering (or equivalent) and at least 6 years demonstrated experience in systems engineering for aircraft, propulsion systems, or similar complex systems.
  • Requires demonstrated experience leading the integration of complex systems.
  • Strong understanding of aerospace development standards (ARP4754A, DO-160, DO-178, DO-254, etc.).
  • Experience with requirements management tools (e.g., DOORS, Jama, Polarion).
  • Familiarity with model based systems engineering (MBSE) best practices.
  • Understanding of failure mode and effects analyses (FMEA), functional hazard analyses (FHA), and system safety assessments
  • Comfortable working in a rapid development environment with frequent data driven design changes and high levels of ambiguity
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • A willingness to work on tasks outside your primary job functions
Bonus Qualifications
  • Strong understanding of electric propulsion technologies, power distribution, and control systems
  • Experience with hybrid-electric or fully electric aircraft systems
  • Familiarity with SOLIDWORKS or similar 3D CAD software
  • Knowledge of thermal management and energy storage systems
  • Background in experimental flight or certification processes
