Senior Telematics System Engineer

Zoox is seeking a highly motivated, energetic, Systems Engineer to lead and drive the Telematics System on the Zoox mobility service. Telematics is critical to the Zoox product as it provides the lifeline between the robots and the command center where the Zoox team oversees robot operations. You will be responsible for supporting a diverse group of product managers, operations leads, robot systems engineers, network engineers, and functional safety engineers in activities including: design documentation of Zoox’s telematics system (architecture, requirements, models); balance performance of telecommunications network between latency and utilization; failure mode identification and analysis; test development; and diagnostic/monitor/watchdog development.

In this role, you will:

  • Set requirements and lead design for vehicle connectivity using multi-carrier aggregation to achieve reliable low latency video streaming
  • Process product use cases and pull together respective engineering and operations teams to decompose into intended functions, components, interfaces, and performance targets
  • Provide technical oversight of software and hardware design, implementation, and test cases. Identify cross-functional gaps and dependencies. Proactively work towards creative solutions to resolve integration issues and deliver a stable system.
  • Work with design and integration teams to develop and execute network system integration plans, pulling together relevant subsystems while keeping track of overall program milestones and delivery objectives.
  • Deep-dive into log data and source code if required to root cause system-level issues and facilitate rapid issue resolution with domain experts. Post root cause analysis, suggest changes to upstream processes and subsystems including diagnostics and other tools.
  • Develop and implement performance metrics for cloud applications. Work with Data Science, Simulation, CI, and QA teams to monitor system performance and identify areas for improvement.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of engineering work experience
  • Hands-on experience debugging complex systems that involve distributed systems, real time video, live telemetry, or cloud platforms
  • Strong understanding of wireless radio hardware and development processes
  • Strong understanding of application-layer software and development processes
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced development environment and proactively collaborate cross-functionally with other teams to solve network integration problems
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Must be self-motivated, with a desire to continuously improve and learn

Bonus Qualifications

  • Cloud computing (AWS, Azure, GCP)
  • Telecom Carrier networks (LTE and 5G) and standards (3GPP)
  • Network fundamentals and standards (gRPC, DDS,RestfulAPI)
  • Functional Safety and Reliability (SOTIF, FTA, FMEA)
  • Proficient in either Linux, C++, Python, or Java
Compensation
There are three major components to compensation for this position: salary, Amazon Restricted Stock Units (RSUs), and Zoox Stock Appreciation Rights. The salary range for this position is $167,000 to $277,000. A sign-on bonus may be offered as part of the compensation package. Compensation will vary based on geographic location and level. Leveling, as well as positioning within a level, is determined by a range of factors, including, but not limited to, a candidate's relevant years of experience, domain knowledge, and interview performance. The salary range listed in this posting is representative of the range of levels Zoox is considering for this position.
