AV Safety Software Engineer
Zoox
The AV Safety Software Engineer will play a critical role in supporting Zoox’s behavioral safety and operational validation efforts. In this position, you will work with large-scale fleet and simulation data to identify, analyze, and triage events related to Rules of the Road compliance and Reputational Risk monitoring.
You will be part of the Safety Strategy and Operations (SSO) team, operationalizing defined requirements through data-driven analyses, dashboards, and workflow automation. While focused on execution – developing queries, running analyses, triaging events, and delivering actionable insights – this role also supports data analysis for requirement development, providing critical inputs to SSO’s process.
The ideal candidate can translate complex behavioral signals from large-scale datasets into clear insights, build tools to streamline analytics workflows, and leverage AI tools to scale event review and triage. You will help ensure Zoox’s autonomous vehicles continue to operate safely and reliably, while providing clarity and actionable intelligence across the organization.
In this role, you will:
- Develop and maintain scalable queries using Python, Spark, and SQL to identify behavioral events of interest in fleet and simulation data.
- Conduct analyses to evaluate vehicle behavior, trends, and compliance with defined Rules of the Road and Reputational Risk metrics.
- Support event triage, including classification, documentation, and prioritization for further investigation.
- Design, build, and maintain dashboards in Looker and Databricks to track safety and reputational metrics.
- Leverage AI tools (LLMs/VLMs, prompt engineering, and context engineering) to assist with event summarization, semi-automated triage, and workflow automation.
- Collaborate closely with other teams to investigate anomalies and emerging patterns, providing actionable insights for operational and strategic decision-making.
- Continuously improve data pipelines, triage processes, and dashboard functionality to support efficient Safety operations.
Qualifications
- BS or MS in Computer Science, Data Science, Robotics, Statistics, or a related field.
- 4+ years of experience working with large-scale datasets, preferably in autonomous vehicles, robotics, or other safety-critical systems.
- Strong programming skills in Python (pandas, PySpark) and advanced SQL/Spark query development.
- Experience designing and maintaining dashboards in Looker, Databricks, Tableau, or similar platforms.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze complex behavioral or operational data and provide actionable insights.
- Familiarity with AI tools (LLMs/VLMs, prompt engineering, context engineering) for data analysis, triage, or workflow automation.
- Experience working with cross-functional teams and communicating technical content clearly to both engineering and non-technical audiences.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail in data-driven environments.
Bonus Qualifications
- PhD in Engineering in a technical field
- Experience working with autonomous vehicle logs or large-scale simulation data.
- Understanding of AV stack components and vehicle behavior.
- Familiarity with Rules of the Road, safety metrics, or operational safety processes.
