Join the Future of Robotic Biomanufacturing!
Multiply Labs is a robotics company on a mission to solve a significant bottleneck in modern medicine: the manufacturing of life-saving advanced biologics - including cell therapies, gene therapies, mRNA therapies, and more.
Currently, advanced biological therapies are produced through manual, labor-intensive processes. This keeps costs astronomical—often exceeding $0.5M-$2M per patient—and limits access to only a fraction of those in need.
As labor scarcity for scientists compound against increased product complexity and sky-high costs of failure, the emergence of robotics and AI makes the automated manufacturing of biologics feasible, reliable, and economically scalable.
We envision that the biomanufacturing factory of the future is fully robotic - closed, automated, and scalable, making therapeutics for some of the most important indications for patients today widely accessible.
Why This Matters
We don’t just build robots; we build the infrastructure for the next generation of biologics manufacturing. Our technology allows biopharma companies to scale production without redesigning their science, drastically lowering regulatory hurdles and bringing costs down to a level where these treatments can actually reach patients.
The Stack & The Scale
The Mission: Build the world’s best robots to make life-saving therapies accessible to all.
The Technology: Advanced robotic orchestration, high-precision automation, cloud-integrated hardware-software systems, dextrous manipulation, and imitation learning.
The Location: Headquartered in San Francisco, CA.
The Backing: Supported by premier investors, including Casdin Capital, Lux Capital, and Y Combinator.
About this Role
We are seeking an Electrical Engineer to join the Hardware team at Multiply Labs. In this role, you will architect and design the electrical systems that power our high-performance robotic systems within large-scale pharmaceutical facilities. You will own the design, integration, and testing of all of our electrical systems, working closely with multidisciplinary teams to ensure our robotics are reliable, compliant, and ready for industrial-scale automation.
Responsibilities
- System Architecture: Own the electrical design of industrial robotic automation systems, focusing on reliability, scalability, and compliance with regulatory standards (IEC, ISO, etc)
- Component Selection: Select and integrate components for electrical cabinets and panels
- Safety: Develop comprehensive safety systems utilizing safety PLCs and integrated emergency stops
- Power Distribution: Determine pharmaceutical facility requirements and design AC and DC power distribution systems, ensuring stable power delivery and electrical isolation for sensitive pharmaceutical instruments
- Motion Control: Design control systems for multi-axis motion and robotic arms using motor controllers, distributed I/O, sensors, and actuators
- Communication Protocols: Recommend and implement robust industrial communication and fieldbus protocols, such as Modbus TCP/RTU, Ethernet/IP, and serial RS-232/485
- Computing: Integrate high-performance edge computing devices to support real-time data processing, machine vision, and advanced robotic orchestration
- Wire Harnesses: Create wiring configurations and harnesses for high-flex robotic applications, focusing on reliability, ease of assembly, and serviceability
- Documentation: Generate electrical document packages for contract manufacturers, including schematics, panel layouts, and BOMs
- Compliance: Ensure strict compliance with pharmaceutical safety directives and industrial standards
- Facilities and Manufacturing: Coordinate with facility engineers and contract manufacturers to manage build schedules and installation logistics
- Builds and Assembly: Support hands-on assembly and wiring for panels, harnesses, and prototyping when necessary
- Deployment and Troubleshooting: Support hands-on assembly and builds, cabling, and electrical troubleshooting during initial system deployments at pharmaceutical facilities
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field
- 4+ years of work experience in industrial automation or complex robotic system design
- Hands-on experience with motor controllers, robot arms, linear/rotary actuators, sensors, PLCs, and safety modules
- Technical mastery of communication protocols (Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP/RTU, and RS-232/485)
- Safety-critical design experience utilizing safety PLCs and hardware-based safety chains
- Strong troubleshooting skills for control systems, PCBAs, and electrical hardware issues
- Familiar with Hardware Product Life Cycle stages, from initial concept to production manufacturing
- Effective communication skills, with a strong emphasis on precise technical writing for diverse audiences
Desirable Additional Experience
- Advanced eCAD skills for designing electrical systems and schematics
- Experience with hardware product certification, processes, best design practices for compliance, and standards (FCC, NFPA 79, UL, CE, IEC)
- Experience working with engineering off-shore subcontractors, vendors, and global contract manufacturers
- Proficiency using PLM systems (e.g. Arena, Agile, or Teamcenter) to manage the development lifecycle, ECO processes, and production-grade documentation
